Coxtie Green and Mountnessing tips close at 4pm from 16 October to February. Book a free slot first. Both shut Christmas and Boxing Day, 1pm on the eves.
Brentwood borough has two household tips, both run by Essex County Council: Brentwood Recycling Centre on Coxtie Green Road and Mountnessing Recycling Centre on Roman Road. From Friday 16 October both switch to winter hours and close at 4pm instead of 5pm.
You must book a free slot before you go to either, unless you hold a Blue Badge or arrive on foot or by bike.

Christmas and New Year 2026
Christmas Eve is a Thursday and New Year’s Eve is a Thursday this year, so both sites close at 1pm on those days. Christmas Day (Friday) and New Year’s Day (Friday) are closed.
One thing to watch. Essex’s pages say the sites close on “Boxing Day”. In 2026 Boxing Day is a Saturday and the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December (GOV.UK, bank holidays). The Love Essex pages do not say which of the two days the closure applies to. Check before you drive out on either. Mountnessing’s Tuesday closure still applies on 29 December.
Booking a slot
Essex made booking permanent at all 21 of its recycling centres on 27 February 2024, after a trial through 2023. Booking is free and each visit needs its own slot (Love Essex, recycling centre bookings).
- Book online from the site’s Love Essex page. There are separate booking links for a car and for a van, pick-up or large trailer at Coxtie Green.
- If you cannot book online, call Essex County Council on 0345 743 0430, 8.30am to 5pm.
- Take your booking confirmation and proof of address. Staff can ask for a council tax bill or driving licence, because only residents of the Essex County Council area can use the sites.
What goes where
Coxtie Green takes small quantities of DIY and household construction waste, as long as you did the work yourself and it came from your own home. It also has a donation point for large electrical appliances and a Community RePaint point for leftover paint.
Mountnessing takes no soil, hardcore, plasterboard, toilets and sinks, or dismantled fitted kitchens and bathrooms. Vans, pick-ups and other commercial-type vehicles cannot use it, even if privately owned (Brentwood Borough Council, Recycling centres).
For small items there is also the borough council’s own recycling site at the Works Depot, The Drive, Warley. It takes cans and plastics, paper and card, cartons, textiles, glass and small electricals only. It has CCTV, and dumping sacks, beds, rubble, fridges or garden waste there is illegal.
